From one busy period to another – as lambing finishes, we are thrown straight into the ecology season. Considering some of the awful losses seen by our neighbours in the Welsh Marches, our flock of sheep have escaped the worst of the snow, and were able to lamb outside. Our last lamb was born last week, and signals a quieter period on the farm. Conversely, this time of year means the ecology work is just beginning. Great crested newt (Triturus cristatus) trapping, for example, has already begun on a new development site as a mitigation method under strict licensing regulations. This particular trapping programme will continue for another 2 months. Alongside our standard maintenance and consultancy work we also had the slightly more unusual job of planting a celebratory orchard, comprised of different heritage and local varieties, and with a tree for every year of the birthday being celebrated!
